Menopause Management and Awareness Workshop

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her periods stop because of the reduction of hormones oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone causing her body to behave differently. This process is usually a gradual one that progresses over several years. The menopause usually occurs between 44 and 56 years of age. The average age it occurs is 47 and it is when women may start experiencing menopausal symptoms. Whilst not all women will experience menopausal symptoms when they go through the menopause, up to 80-90% will have some symptoms, some even describing them as severe and debilitating.

The most common symptoms are stress, anxiety, insomnia, hot flushes, and night sweats. Other symptoms include, low energy levels, brain fog or impaired memory, low mood, low libido, joint aches, headaches, palpitations, and urinary symptoms. Menopausal symptoms last on average for more than 8 years and it is estimated that more than a third of women experience long-term menopausal symptoms which may continue for several years beyond that. When the ovaries have stopped producing oestrogen, this fall in hormone levels may influence long-term health.

This is the current situation for the millions of women in the UK who, at some stage in their life, will experience menopause. But, due to a lack of awareness among the public, employers, the insufficient training among some medical professionals and social stigma, women’s needs during this critical life change are frequently ignored or overlooked. This contributes to the lack of understanding. While attending a menopause café (a form of support group) who are going through their menopause, I have realised that no two stories are the same. Some women transition smoothly, without any major effects. Others will suffer the most extreme symptoms and endure a massive negative impact on their lives, work, families, and careers.

There is help, Menopause cafés have popped up and dotted around towns and cities all over the UK. They are welcoming and inclusive spaces where women can connect, share experiences, and support one another through the challenges and changes of menopause. By providing practical tools, knowledge and support, women are empowered to embrace wellness and self-care.

At Healing Hands Haven, we are working towards a more holistic view of an individual’s overall health state, so that some symptoms can be managed through our holistic health workshops. This does not just immediately improve current health, the menopause is a unique and individual journey, different women will be affected in diverse ways. We can however provide you with the knowledge, skills, and advice to implement natural self-care strategies to manage your symptoms and support you on your healing journey.
