Indian Head Massage is an ancient therapeutic practice that has been used in India for thousands of years. It originates from Ayurveda, an Indian traditional system of wellbeing, with Ayurveda translating as the “science of life.” Ayurveda recognises the close relationship between the mind and body. Indian Head Massage therefore focuses not only on physical relaxation, but also on creating a sense of calm and supporting overall wellbeing.
This hands on workshop gives you the opportunity to gain experience about the origins of Indian Head Massage, experience the techniques for yourself, and discover how they can be incorporated into your own self care routine.
What Is An Indian Head Massage?
Indian Head Massage focuses on the head, scalp, face, neck, and shoulders, using a combination of massage movements and acupressure techniques. It can be a wonderful way to release everyday tension, encourage relaxation, and give you some much needed time to slow down and switch off. You’ll also be introduced to pressure points across the head, scalp, face, and neck, and learn how these techniques can be incorporated into a flowing massage routine.
An Indian Head Massage is often enjoyed as a deeply relaxing experience and may help support:
This workshop will help you understand these potential benefits, while also learning when techniques may need adapting for individual circumstances.
This isn’t about sitting and listening to a presentation all day. You’ll have the opportunity to experience and practise the techniques yourself, exploring the head, scalp, face, neck, and shoulders, giving you a real feel for how the movements come together, and how to perform a practical routine on yourself as part of your own self care.
You’ll also be introduced to a selection of tools that can complement and enhance the massage, including specialist combs and handheld devices designed to stimulate the scalp, alongside traditional hands on techniques. We’ll explore carrier oils too, and how to choose the right one for your individual skin and hair needs. Tools, devices and products demonstrated during the workshop are available to purchase separately, should you wish to continue using them at home.
We’ll introduce some basic anatomy and physiology, helping you understand the muscles, nerves and blood vessels around the head, neck, and shoulders, and how this relates to massage, alongside the traditional origins of Indian Head Massage and how techniques are applied safely. Safety is an important part of the workshop. We’ll discuss contraindications and precautions, including situations where techniques may need to be avoided or adapted, plus safe use of massage oils, appropriate pressure, and responsible use of additional tools.
